Evan Mills: A Note from Me to You

Hey,
Here’s a note from me to you,
Or you to me.
It’s all the same — isn’t that wild?
There’s a queer, closeted ten-year-old little boy, dancing to “Lady Marmalade” on repeat in your twin sized bed that you slept in until you were 23. Don’t let him go. Don’t let his light fade. It’s corny, for sure, but remember that’s the person you enjoy being. There’s no need to hide that for so long. Why do we have to feel like our uniqueness and personalities are supposed to be hidden because it doesn’t suit well with “others”?
It’s pretty ridiculous when you think about it. But, also, look how long it took for us to get comfortable with where we’re at with ourselves. I'm happy to report that you, today, right now, are so filled with love and happiness. It’s wild, cause it’s like, good, healthy love and beautiful, wonderful opportunities with amazing people. The love you are surrounded with is genuine and real. Don’t take that for granted. And give that love back one hundo p.
You’re in a good place, and you know it’s just going to keep getting better. Keep listening to yourself and what you need. It’s gotten you this far.
Know that your experiences are going to be good and bad, and learn from each of them. It’s tough to say a painful experience is a learning moment, but it truly is. And you’ll know what I’m talking about when you get there. Something clicks, and it’s the best thing that could have happened.
You loved yourself — like, truly figured it out and started to love yourself. It was good. And honestly, the pandemic (the one you’ll be talking to your grandkids about for your “in my day” stories) was a really great moment to check in with yourself and spend some time with you.
I love you.
It’s funny to say, to write to yourself and say, ‘Hey, I love you.’ But self-love is important, and I don’t say that enough. So, from me to you, and you to me: I want you to always know that I love you.
You’re gonna love Legally Blonde, Kick-Ass, and Hilary Duff far too much, and it’ll be okay. You’ll learn 3LW choreography alone on a Friday night using a VCR and a perfectly timed VHS recording of a Disney Channel Music Video 'commercial.' You’re gonna be so gay, and I just want you to f*cking love that about you. Cause, damn, it’s good.
We’ve made it this far. Embrace you. See ya soon, or now, or whenever. And always remember to keep enjoying every moment, fool.
