WISHUWEREHERE: How Not To Be Ashy

A Celebration of Black Joy and staying smooth + confident

Words by Felton Edward Kizer

There's something magical about intentional Black spaces. On a Tuesday night in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, I witnessed that magic. But, before we get into the magic, let's set the scene. I walked into Juice@1340 as I’ve done many times before. Still, this time I was immediately greeted with vibes courtesy of Finding Ijeoma and Derrick C. Westbrook in his hoochie daddy shorts–immediately, I understood how my evening would unfold. This was a collaboration that we all needed.

When the lockdowns started, I sought refugee at the bar with Derrick and any other wayward souls trying to engage in some escapism. I never found what I was looking for at the bottom of whatever was in my glass at the time, but I’ve always felt safe. Fast forward two years, and I no longer seek comfort or anything at any bar these days, but being back reminded me of how intentional Derrick is.

When I was approached to capture this event, I honestly didn't think much about it–truth be told, I’m not one for shooting events, but here I was, camera in hand and ready to have some fun. After my quick daydream of nostalgia, I set my intentions on capturing ‘Black Joy,’ I wanted everyone to look at these photos and develop a severe case of FOMO–while also sending a gentle reminder to everyone that I do this.

Vibe Hour–the happy hour we all need on a Tuesday.
