At their core, the ‘queer’ aesthetic norms we recognize today: women in tucked shirts and cuffed jeans with unheeled shoes and men in floral suits on the red carpet are palatable, slight variations on trends that do represent increasing acceptance of visible gayness and gender nonconformity, but only to the extent that it minimally challenges heterosexual expectations.
The Politics of Fashion
The term for production-by-prisoner is called “prison in-sourcing,” and it essentially refers to the use of prisoners to supply goods, as opposed to outsourcing from other countries. The 2018 U.S Prison Strikes had a plethora of demands, one of which said “All persons imprisoned in any place of detention under United States jurisdiction must be paid the prevailing wage in their state or territory for their labor.” Unfortunately, none of the demands from the 2018 strikes were met.
The Calculated Sincerity of Woke Fashion
Amidst the ongoing uncertainty of coronavirus and on the tails of an interrupted fashion month, Gucci’s Alessandro Michele announced that the brand would be cutting shows from the previous cruise, pre-fall, Spring/Summer, Autumn/Winter rotation to two seasonless collections. Gucci’s Instagram announcement followed Saint Laurent’s decision to opt out of Paris Fashion Week, declaring that they would “take control of their own calendar.”
